Northern Australia
With red soil, azure bays and ancient rivers, Northern Australia is home to some of the country’s most intact and globally significant natural landscapes. Across the North, First Nations people manage these landscapes with care as they have for tens of thousands of years. Yet the Great North stands at the precipice of environmental collapse as it faces some of the most significant threats to nature unfolding today, such as destructive agribusiness and fracking, and an increasingly hostile climate.
Our focus on the north reflects the importance of acting at this critical time, supporting organisations and First Nations communities working to manage, restore and prevent irreversible damage to its free-flowing rivers, ancient aquifers, vast tropical savannas, rainforests, wetlands and coastal ecosystems.
The following organisations work across the vast and varied environments of Australia’s north, from Cape York to Uluru, Kakadu to the Kimberley. United in their approach of working from the local level through to advocating for protections at the regional and national level, their individual and collective efforts are crucial to changing the trajectory of the Great North.

Environment Centre NT plays a critical role in advocating for nature in one of Australia’s most environmentally significant regions, during increasingly challenging times. We refunded ECNT to support their efforts to work with communities across the Territory to protect the region’s unique biodiversity, including strengthening capacity to defend massive aquifer-fed rivers threatened by agribusiness, fracking and inadequate environmental laws.

The Northern Australian Conservation Alliance (NACA) was formed in early 2025 by four key regional conservation bodies to build collective power, shift narratives and secure lasting protections for nature. The founding members are Environment Centre NT (ECNT), Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC), Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) and Environs Kimberley.

Rainforest Rescue has been protecting and restoring rainforests in Far North Queensland since 1999. Focused in a region recognised with UNESCO World Heritage status, their crucial work enhances rainforest ecosystems with flow on effects for the Daintree River. They re-establish rainforests through propagation and planting, maintenance, and restoration programs, and they also purchase and protect high conservation value rainforest, preserving its biodiversity.
