Northern Australia
Northern Australia stands at a critical juncture. With vast landscapes of red soil, free-flowing rivers, ancient aquifers and azure bays, the North has benefitted from the care and continuing custodianship of First Nations people across tens of thousands of years. But nature and culture across the region is under increasing pressure from destructive agribusiness, fracking, invasive species and a changing climate.
This portfolio supports organisations working to manage, protect and restore these places – from Cape York to Uluru, Kakadu to the Kimberley. Working from the local level through to regional and national advocacy, they are building a future in which the North’s unique natural and cultural values can endure.

Environment Centre NT plays a critical role in advocating for nature in one of Australia’s most environmentally significant regions, during increasingly challenging times. We refunded ECNT to support their efforts to work with communities across the Territory to protect the region’s unique biodiversity, including defending massive aquifer-fed rivers threatened by agribusiness, fracking and inadequate environmental laws.

The Northern Australia Conservation Alliance (NACA) was formed in early 2025 by four key regional conservation bodies to build collective power, shift narratives and secure lasting protections for nature. The founding members are Environment Centre NT (ECNT), Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC), Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) and Environs Kimberley.

Rainforest Rescue has been protecting and restoring rainforests in Far North Queensland since 1999. In a region recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Area, their work for rainforest ecosystems has flow-on benefits for the Daintree River catchment. They re-establish forests through propagation, planting, maintenance and restoration programs, while also purchasing and protecting high-conservation-value rainforest to preserve its biodiversity.
