National Organisations

Protecting Australia’s waterways and coastlines requires action at every level – from restoration and protection on the ground, to independent science and advocacy for policies, systems and practices that shape how we interact with and care for them better on a national level.

It has been crucial for our funding to include support for organisations working to address the systemic challenges and opportunities that underpin the health of our national waterways and coastlines. These organisations work to build knowledge, shift policy and practice, strengthen First Nations leadership, and advocate for the changes needed to protect Australia’s ecosystems for the long term.

The Biodiversity Council brings together experts, First Nations leaders and the wider community to solve Australia’s biodiversity crisis. Originally established within the University of Melbourne, they recently transitioned to become an independent organisation. This has enabled them to work with partners to establish the Nature Media Centre, a non-partisan resource to help shine a spotlight on Australia’s unfolding environmental crisis through supporting nature journalism and lifting community voices.
